About mePortfolio

Welcome to my site.

My name is Ian Bennett and I am a published Motorsport Photographer based in Kingston-Upon-Hull, UK.

For me, as a photographer, there’s nothing quite like the lure of the motor racing track, with the persistent smell of burning tyre-rubber and super-heated brakes in my nose, and the spine-tingling scream of a highly tuned V8 tearing at my ear-drums.
However, as a Lamborghini thunders past at 220km/h yet again, and I crouch behind a barrier in the torrential rain, desperately trying to capture light photons on a small electronic sensor buried deep in the camera, I find myself starting to question my own state of mind.
My sister told me many years ago that all photographers are “a bit weird”, and as the rain begins to seep into my clothes and I shuffle my feet yet again trying to retain the last vestige of warmth in them, I check my lens once more for errant raindrops and come to it, she’s probably not wrong.
As all photographers everywhere will affirm, it’s the thrill of the hunt for us. Our hunger for that elusive "perfect image” drives us to constantly crave another shot, in case we get the result we wanted, yet knowing in our hearts that there will always be another angle or a better style, with different light conditions...or focal length...or depth of field...or shutter speed...or by moving a few inches to the left...or the right...or just standing differently altogether....Then, when we finally get to look through our images, there's always something that annoys us about the very best of them, even though, underneath, we are actually pleased.
Yeah, I guess she's probably not wrong.

My photography experience started at the age of 8 as I watched my grandfather developing his own negatives and producing some stunning images from them. While I don’t think he ever got involved in shooting motorsport, it obviously sowed seeds in my brain that quickly germinated, because I got my first compact camera when I was 14 years old, and only 5 years later bought my first SLR, which was a Practika B200 film camera. Thirty years and many cameras later, my go-to cameras are Canon EOS 1DX II’s with an EOS 5DsR for those occasions where I don’t need the high burst rate. Attached to the bodies, are generally the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, and the EF 200-400 f/4L lenses and my trusty Gitzo monopod for support where needed.

With my love of photography, only marginally older than my love of anything with an engine and wheels, it’s hardly surprising to say, I love my work, as the results on here show, and I’m now shooting everything from Mopeds to MotoGP and from Go-Karts to Formula 1, with all sorts in-between. Hopefully you too enjoy what you see here and I look forward to hearing from you.
